An individual seeking asylum in the United States may do so after having to flee their country for religious or political prosecution. The immigrant requests protective status at any U.S. port of entry such as airport, seaport or U.S. border. The immigrant must submit an application for asylum within a year of living in the U.S. The applicant will have to attend an interview to determine his or her eligibility for asylum.
An individual in refugee status is someone who fears returning to their country or someone who cannot return to their home country because of a serious threat such as persecution. After the immigrant has been in the U.S. for one year in asylum status, they may submit their application to become a permanent resident.
